Compared to conventional cables, busbar trunking systems demonstrate significant advantages as the primary power supply lines. However, over time, operational experience has revealed that busbar trunking systems themselves have numerous irreparable defects. Therefore, busbar trunking systems are not an ideal solution for use as the main power supply line.
First, the products are expensive, require a large installation footprint, have a lengthy installation period, involve high labor intensity, and demand substantial investment. It is generally acknowledged that plug-in busbars and trunking systems are costly. For example, for a three-phase four-wire system with a floor height of 3 meters and a mains current rating of 100A, the cost of a branch-connected plug-in busbar or trunking system would be around 2,000 yuan. Due to the special installation environment and stringent requirements for busbars and trunking systems, electrical shafts must be separately reserved within buildings exclusively for their use. For a high-rise building, the space occupied by electrical shafts from top to bottom can be quite significant, thereby increasing construction costs. Busbars and trunking systems are installed in sections, each weighing nearly 100 kilograms. Their installation requires manual handling and adjustment throughout the entire process, making the labor intensity extremely high. Moreover, since different floors may have varying current ratings, the interchangeability of busbars and trunking systems is often poor. If the joints are not smooth and flat, or if there is insufficient space to tighten the connecting bolts, the installation becomes even more time-consuming and labor-intensive. In addition, the installation of busbars and trunking systems has strict requirements: during installation, collisions and impacts must be avoided; connecting bolts should be tightened appropriately—too tight or too loose can both pose potential hazards and shorten the service life of the busbars and trunking systems. Therefore, it is essential to rely on experienced and skilled workers to carry out the installation.
2. They have poor moisture resistance and corrosion resistance, demanding strict requirements for both the installation environment and installation procedures. As a result, maintenance efforts are substantial. During transportation and storage, the insulation layers of busbars/slots can become damp and deteriorate, while the copper bars may undergo oxidation and corrosion—especially at connector points, where the copper bars are more prone to oxidation and corrosion, leading to degraded electrical performance. Therefore, prior to installation, busbars/slots must be properly maintained. During operation, as busbars/slots experience frequent temperature fluctuations, the insulation layers release moisture when heated and absorb moisture when cooled, thereby compromising their insulation quality. Additionally, connections may loosen and oxidize with temperature changes, increasing contact resistance and causing the connections to heat up. These facts clearly underscore the need for regular maintenance of busbars/slots. Busbars/slots in long-term use should be maintained and inspected at least once a year. Before performing any repairs, use a multimeter to verify that the busbar/slot’s conductive strips are de-energized. The primary inspection items include:
(1) Check whether the contact between all fasteners and conductive components is loose.
(2) Check whether the insulating materials have aged or deteriorated, and whether the conductive parts have melted or become degraded.
(3) Check whether any foreign objects have entered the busbar/channel and whether there is any water leakage.
Any issues discovered should be addressed promptly to eliminate potential hazards. If insulation breakdown is detected, the busbar/channel should be dismantled in sections or inspected section by section using a withstand voltage tester to pinpoint the fault location. Then, replace the faulty busbar/channel with a new one or re-tie it properly.
3. During operation, the contacts or joints of busbars/busducts tend to generate heat easily, or their current-carrying capacity may be insufficient. As a result, the busbars/busducts can overheat. Therefore, when selecting the capacity of busbars/busducts in specific engineering designs, it is essential to thoroughly calculate the actual electrical load of the building, take into account the impact of ambient temperature, and allow for an adequate margin of safety.
