Installation, Transportation, and Storage Considerations for Fire-Resistant Cables

  Fire-resistant cables are a new type of environmentally friendly cable that boasts excellent performance and high reliability and safety. They have become an indispensable part of modern electronic life. Since fire-resistant cables are made from mineral and inorganic materials, they neither cause fires nor are likely to burn or support combustion. Consequently, even when a fire breaks out near the melting point of copper, fire-resistant cables can still continue to supply power.   When installing fire-resistant cables, it’s important to pay attention to the proper installation method to avoid any adverse conditions during use. Let’s take a look at the key installation precautions for fire-resistant cables below.

  I. Installation Precautions for Fire-Resistant Cables:

  1. Before laying fire-resistant cables, check whether the cable model meets the design requirements, whether the cable exterior is damaged, and whether the insulation resistance complies with the standards.

  2. Understand the structure, performance, and characteristics of fire-resistant cables, as well as the types, specifications, categories, and suitable application environments of these cables.

  3. Be familiar with the accessories for fire-resistant cables, as well as the installation and usage methods for each accessory.

  4. Be familiar with construction drawings and site conditions, and develop a detailed construction plan.

  5. During the laying and installation of fire-resistant cables, Qin Ying should regularly measure the insulation resistance of the cables and promptly address any issues that arise. Before and after cable laying, as well as before and after the fabrication of terminal and intermediate joints, the insulation resistance of the cables should be measured multiple times and compared before and after to ensure the quality of the cables throughout the construction process. Each installation step must be carried out without any damage or defects.

  6. Whether the fire-resistant cable is cut, left hanging freely, or left to sit for a period of time before construction begins, it is essential to promptly complete the termination work at the cable ends to prevent moisture ingress and water from entering the conductor, which could compromise the cable’s insulation performance.   6. After the fire-resistant cable is laid, if there are no intermediate joints, the cable can be directly connected to terminal blocks. If there are intermediate joints, first complete the intermediate joints and then perform an insulation resistance test to ensure compliance.

  7. Once the terminal grounding configuration is complete, the metal conduit can be used as the grounding wire. The laid cables should be properly grounded and installed within 24 hours to prevent the conductors and insulation layers from being exposed to moisture for extended periods.

  8. Cable installation and laying shall strictly comply with the national standard GB 50168-2006, "Code for Construction and Acceptance of Cable Lines in Electrical Installation Engineering."

  Fire-resistant cable transportation and storage:

  1. During transportation, it is strictly prohibited to drop fire-resistant cables from a height—especially in low-temperature environments (typically 5°C or below). Throwing or dropping cables in such conditions may cause damage and cracking to the insulation and jacket.

  2. Fire-resistant cables should, as much as possible, be stored indoors and cable reels must not be laid flat.

  3. When lifting packages, it is strictly prohibited to lift multiple pallets simultaneously. On vehicles, ships, and other modes of transportation, fire-resistant cable reels should be securely fastened using appropriate methods to prevent them from colliding with each other or tipping over, thereby safeguarding the cables from mechanical damage.

  4. Cables must not come into contact with acids, alkalis, or mineral oils and should be stored separately from these corrosive substances. The warehouse where cables are stored must be free of harmful gases that could damage insulation or corrode metals.

  5. During storage, the cable should be wound up periodically (once every three months in summer; in other seasons, the frequency can be adjusted accordingly). When rolling the cable, ensure that the downward-facing edge of the storage tray is rolled upward to prevent the bottom surface from becoming damp and rotting. While storing, always pay close attention to whether the fire-resistant cable sealing sleeve remains intact.

  6. The storage period for fire-resistant cables is limited to the date of product delivery, generally not exceeding one and a half years, and in no case exceeding two years.
