Here’s a quick, practical guide—learn about the standards for fire-resistant cables in just one minute!

What are the standards for fire-resistant cables? Let’s take a look together below. To ensure data security, people hope to have sufficient time—before the entire network shuts down after a fire—to recover all data and move it to a safe location, thereby minimizing the likelihood of data loss. For this reason, cable television standards include fire-resistance criteria known as “line integrity” standards. The goal is for cables to remain capable of maintaining circuit continuity at the fire scene, allowing them to transmit power and information normally. Cables that meet these line-integrity requirements are therefore also referred to as fire-resistant cables.

Currently, there are two typical classes of fire-resistant cables. According to Chinese standards, these cables can continue functioning for 90 minutes at temperatures as low as 750°C (E90). Under German standards, they can maintain their functionality for 180 minutes even when exposed to temperatures ranging from 800°C to 850°C (FE180). According to the recently released Chinese data center standards, all fire-resistant cables must meet the CMP-grade integrated cable specifications. This means that such cables remain undamaged and capable of normal data transmission even at temperatures as high as 500°C, providing sufficient time for emergency data backups. However, these cables do not meet the national standards for fire-resistant cables and therefore cannot be classified as "fire-rated" cables. Cable television products play a critical role in transmitting data, images, and other information within building and engineering safety systems. Due to the lack of awareness among users and engineers regarding the importance of selecting appropriate cable products—especially fire-retardant and fire-resistant cables—cables have frequently been found to exacerbate fires by fueling flames and releasing toxic gases, posing serious risks to life and property and causing significant losses and negative impacts. Drawing on past lessons learned, an increasing number of users and engineers are becoming more attentive to the selection and proper use of cable types, gradually shifting away from the previous practice of prioritizing price over quality when purchasing cable products. Through concerted efforts and public awareness campaigns led by governments, industry associations, engineering firms, and manufacturing enterprises, the coexistence of high-end equipment and substandard cables in engineering systems is steadily declining. People are increasingly recognizing the vital role that fire-retardant and fire-resistant cables play in engineering applications. In the future, manufacturers of fire-resistant and fire-retardant cables will no longer limit themselves to simply providing basic products; instead, they will continue to expand their product lines and strengthen their service philosophies. By offering users comprehensive, compatible products and providing full-spectrum technical support and services for the accurate and rational use of these cables, this trend will undoubtedly become the market norm in the fire-resistant and fire-retardant cable installation industry.
“Building an internationally renowned national brand for China’s cabling industry by leveraging the strengths of global cable television enterprises” has become the development goal and corporate mission of leading companies in the industry today. Guided by this belief, China’s cable products have already penetrated deeply into various sectors across all industries, and fire-retardant cables are increasingly gaining attention for their safety features and meeting the demands of the global market trend. International cooperation between domestic enterprises and those from developed countries has been fully launched on all fronts. Currently, even China’s most powerful cable television enterprises are embracing the internationalization trend driven by market developments and widely promoting special cables such as fire-retardant ones. Moreover, these companies have invested heavily in independent R&D, formulated and begun implementing a global development strategy several years ago. Through extensive cooperation and exchanges in technology, finance, and management, they have introduced advanced technologies and management concepts from foreign enterprises, rapidly enhancing and developing their own capabilities. Additionally, these companies are actively expanding overseas, seeking international markets and increasing their product exports; currently, a large number of their fire-retardant cables are being exported to markets around the world.
