When a busbar experiences a short circuit, a short-circuit current many times greater than the normal operating current flows through the high-current busbar from the power source toward the short-circuit point. Such short-circuit currents often exceed 15 kA, and they can exert both mechanical forces and thermal effects on the busbar. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the busbar’s ability to withstand short-circuit currents—specifically, to assess its dynamic stability and thermal stability. The power loss caused by resistance in the current-carrying busbar is converted into heat, leading to an increase in the busbar’s temperature.
Although copper-aluminum materials can be used at higher temperatures without compromising their mechanical strength, the contact surfaces of bolted connections tend to oxidize at elevated temperatures, increasing the contact resistance. As the contact resistance rises, the temperature of the contact surfaces continues to climb, creating a vicious cycle that ultimately damages the contact areas. Therefore, oxidation of electrical contact surfaces has become the primary factor limiting the operating temperature of busbar trunking systems. Bolted connections with silver-plated contact surfaces allow for higher busbar temperatures, but they come at a very high cost. Typically, bolted connections with tin-plated or zinc-plated contact surfaces are used instead; these connections permit lower operating temperatures. In China, the allowable operating temperature for busbars is specified as 85 to 90°C, while the allowable operating temperature for enclosed busbars and their housings is 65 to 70°C. When welding is employed, the allowable operating temperature can reach up to 110°C.
In general, busbar design should also take into account the thermal effects of short-circuit currents under fault conditions.
In the event of a short circuit in the power grid, although protective relays can respond quickly and disconnect the circuit within a delay time ranging from just a few seconds to a dozen seconds, the short-circuit current is extremely high, generating substantial heat. As a result, the busbar temperature rises sharply within a very short period. The ability of the busbar to safely withstand this thermal effect caused by the short circuit is referred to as short-circuit thermal stability.
