What is a mineral-insulated fire-resistant cable?
Feb 24,2022
Mineral-insulated fire-resistant cables are composed entirely of inorganic materials—copper metal and magnesium oxide powder. By their very nature, these cables cannot burn or contribute to combustion without first igniting themselves. Copper has a melting point of 1083°C, while magnesium oxide has a melting point of 2800°C. Therefore, these cables are truly fire-resistant; even under fire conditions close to copper’s melting point, they can continue to supply power.
Mineral-insulated fire-resistant cables, also known as “flexible fire-resistant cables,” come in a variety of models and specifications. However, they are characterized by their flexibility, stability, and ease of installation. As environmentally friendly cables that align with the principles advocated by modern society, mineral-insulated fire-resistant cables have been rapidly developing in China.
Mineral-insulated cable—commonly referred to as MI cable—is often called magnesium oxide cable or fire-resistant cable in China when used for wiring. It is a cable with copper conductors and a copper sheath, insulated with the mineral material magnesium powder. Mineral-insulated cables are composed of two inorganic materials: copper conductors and magnesium oxide, encased in a copper sheath.
Advantages and characteristics of mineral-insulated fire-resistant cables
1. Fire Resistance: This cable is made of two inorganic materials—copper and magnesium oxide. As a result, it neither burns nor supports combustion. The copper sheath melts at 1083°C, while the magnesium oxide insulation material solidifies at 2800°C. The cable itself is completely non-combustible and, when exposed to flames, does not produce toxic fumes or gases.
2. High operating temperature: It can withstand continuous operating temperatures of up to 250°C. However, in emergency situations, it can continue to operate for a short period even at temperatures approaching the melting point of the copper sleeve.
3. Long service life: Inorganic materials ensure the cable’s stability, longevity, and fire resistance.
4. Explosion-proof performance: Highly rigid insulating materials can prevent steam, gases, and flames from passing between the components of equipment connected by cables.
5. Small outer diameter: The diameter is smaller than that of other cables with the same rated current.
6. Waterproof: The mineral-insulated cable can be fully submerged in water and continued to be operated using a smooth metal cover.
7. High mechanical strength: Robust and durable, capable of withstanding severe mechanical damage without compromising electrical conductivity.
8. Short-circuit fault rating: At the same temperature, the short-circuit fault rating is significantly higher for this type of cable than for other types.
9. Grounding: A separate ground wire is not required, as the copper sheath used in fire-resistant cables already serves as the ground wire and provides a low grounding resistance.
10. High Corrosion Resistance: Copper sheaths offer high corrosion resistance, eliminating the need for additional protective measures on most equipment. However, the copper sheath of fire-resistant cables is susceptible to chemical corrosion; therefore, in areas with severe industrial pollution, it’s advisable to encase these cables in a plastic sheath to protect mineral-insulated cables.
11. Excellent corrosion and explosion-proof performance. Thanks to the use of seamless copper tubing as the sheath, this product offers resistance to water, moisture, oil, and certain chemical substances. Moreover, the copper tubing boasts considerable mechanical strength, giving it superior explosion-proof capabilities.
